On March 31st, the Consulate General of Mexico in New York, in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute of NYC and Mexican Coalition, organized an exceptional concert featuring the Tzotzil rock band Saktzevul from Zinacantán, Chiapas. Hosted in New York City, the event seamlessly blended contemporary rock with traditional Tzotzil musical elements, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. Beyond mere entertainment, this performance served as an educational platform, shedding light on the diverse cultural tapestry of Mexico’s indigenous communities.

The concert underscored the significant role of Mexico’s indigenous languages and traditions in shaping the nation’s cultural identity. It emphasized the urgent need for preserving and promoting indigenous languages, positioning the event as a poignant reminder of the power of cultural expression to bridge communities across generations. Through their artistic prowess, Saktzevul contributes significantly to the vitality and continuity of the Tzotzil language, ensuring that the cultural legacy of their community is safeguarded and celebrated both domestically and internationally.
