In celebration of the 214th anniversary of our independence, Consul General Jorge Islas López, accompanied by the talented actress Belinda, illuminated the Empire State Building with the colors of our national flag. Also present were Mexico's Representative to the United Nations, Héctor Vasconcelos, and the naval and military attachés from Mexico's mission to the UN.
Following this, a civic ceremony and the traditional "Grito de Independencia" took place in the iconic Times Square. Consul General Jorge Islas López was joined by the Governor-elect of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta, Mexico's Permanent Representative to the UN, Héctor Vasconcelos, singers Belinda and Joy, Commissioners Manuel Castro and Edward Mermelstein, as well as the naval and military attachés of Mexico's UN mission. Attendees enjoyed traditional Mexican music and cuisine.
As part of the ongoing celebrations of the 214th anniversary of our independence, Consul General Jorge Islas López was the special guest of Nasdaq to open the trading session, providing an opportunity to showcase to New York and the world the historical significance and contemporary relevance of Mexico.
Following this event, the Consul General gave the traditional "Grito de Independencia" at the Chamber of Commerce's celebration, accompanied by Executive Director Alejandro Ramos and representatives and members of the Mexican business community in New York. It was a wonderful evening to celebrate Mexico!
