On November 2, 2024, from 4:00–6:00 p.m., the Museum of the Moving Image collaborated for the first time with the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York to celebrate a vibrant Day of the Dead at the Museum of the Moving Image. The event featured a performance of Aztec Mexica dance, ofrendas, fun digital media activities for kids and families, and music from the Indigenous dance troupe Yayauhki Tezcatlipoka. There was also a face-painting session inspired by historical Día de Muertos characters. Visitors were invited to explore the public altar in the Museum’s courtyard, followed by a catrina and catrin contest hosted by artist historian Rosa Ruíz and Catrinamía. All performances were free. For a discounted price, there was a special 6:30 p.m. screening of Alejandro Amenábar’s 2001 film The Others (PG-13), which tells the story of Grace (Nicole Kidman), who lives with her two children in an isolated mansion during World War II, shrouded in thick fog. Soon, three individuals appeared, whom Grace welcomed to work as servants in her home. Grace’s children, Anne and Nicholas, suffered from a serious medical condition that prevented them from ever being exposed to sunlight, so they lived only by the light of candles and fireplaces. The film immerses viewers in a labyrinth of locked doors, where the presence of “intruders” who seem to coexist in the house becomes increasingly perceptible.
