For the third consecutive year, the Consulate General of Mexico in New York had the opportunity to commemorate the Día de los Muertos in the heart of New York City, Times Square, from October 28th to November 2nd. The multiple activities were committed to art and tradition that came together to express the importance of keeping the connection with our loved ones alive. Dia de los Muertos is a way to honor those who are no longer with us and to commemorate our ancient celebrations.
This year, the celebration incorporated 6 statues of Catrinas from Atlixco, Puebla, that were presented as a temporal exhibition in the company of the classic and historical Catrinas and Catrin. The inauguration brought together the Mexican community to witness typical crafts, music, and dances. Also, the community and federal authorities were invited to the annual walk in the company of the Consul General of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López, and the Mexican community characterized by the theme.
The celebration continued days later in the same framework with a celebration located in Manhattan´s iconic neighborhood, “Nomad” which highlights the prestigious FlatIron building. The next event was a distinguished reception at the iconic Gracie Mansion hosted by the NYC Mayor, Eric Adams, which opened the doors to the Mexican community for the first time. Last but not least, the closure of events was a public and harmonic concert in Times Square.
